Menu Model 1911 Colt		Back     "A-Z" INDEX &   SEARCH Automatic Pistols or Auto Pistols Often called autos or automatics in common parlance, auto pistols are self loading pistols, generally intended for single round fire at each depression of the trigger and are more correctly termed 'Semi-Automatic'.

These single shot characteristics separate this type of weapon from machine pistols or sub machine guns (which are correctly termed 'automatic'). However this distinction is becoming more difficult to make as modern sub machine guns like the Uzi and Ingram are quite compact and future developments will make this class of weapon even smaller.
